Vintage Poodle Clips! - Party Recipes

Long before I got a poodle I often saw little poodle like dogs and was unsure of the breed, the reason, people these days tend to shave their poodles short, short, short!   I would be in the pet supply store and see the owner of a poodle admonishing the groomer to make sure they didn't make their dog look like a poodle.    I always found those exchanges a bit sad, after all why wouldn't you want your dog to look like what it is?  Poodles are a wonderful breed with a long and glorious history.

This just might be my favorite vintage dog photo ever.

Proof poodle have always been associated with style

I really like this cut with the little puffs by the feet but easy and short.

Now even I can see that a full show clip is a bit extreme, (this is one of Tuvok's relatives from D'barra toy poodles) , and of course it takes a tremendous amount of effort to maintain.  I also can't help but wonder if the dogs like it (though I know Tuvok's breeder takes amazing care of her dogs and cherishes them, she is the epitome of a responsible breeder, and her toys are very active).

However, I do think there is a happy medium between shaved bald and show dog fancy.  I knew when I got a poodle, I wanted it to look like a poodle.  I wanted a practical clip I could maintain and that would be comfortable for the dog.   Searching online I discovered, not very surprisingly, that I really liked a lot of the vintage style clips.

Most of these clips are not too extreme but definitely leave no doubt that the dog in question is a poodle.   I'm a very proud poodle poodle print  this is the most maligned breed I've ever owned and I had a large pit mix.  Since adding Tuvok to the family I've had many people, including quite a few dog owners, express shock that I  have a poodle or wrinkle their nose and basically say "eeeww a poodle."   I think poodles are amazing, I'm a total breed convert now and  and I definitely wan't it know that Mr. Tuvok is  poodle and proud of it.  So on our last trip to the vet for grooming, which we do every 4 to 5 weeks, I asked for a pretty traditional clip.   I really like the results and Tuvok is comfortable and happy.

This cut is also pretty easy to maintain.   Poodles need ALOT of grooming and I brush Tuvok every day. I'm very lucky though, that so far at least, his coat is very soft and not at all kinky and so easy to keep clean.  He also has not interest in rolling dirt, a favorite habit of our bulldog Bob's. he prefers to race and prance around.  So that helps keep him clean.  I really love this clip and plan on keeping it at least until the summer, when I'm considering a Miami clip.
